Day 4: Legal Libations

Welcome to Day 4!
This is one of my favorite days of this whole challenge right (for obvious reason’s right LOL)? I’m sure you understand the importance of having your business set up on a secure foundation but maybe you haven’t taken the time (or had a legal consultation) to really see a bird’s eye view of what you need.
Well this day of the challenge is more reflective so you know what’s necessary. Let’s get into it.
Today’s LEVEL UP Coaching
When it comes to the legal foundation of your business, as you grow your company your legal needs will change. Maybe you started off with one volunteer and now you’ve hired your first assistant and contractors. Maybe you’re finally venturing into hiring your first full-time employee or taking on your first investor. Either way, every step you take in your company will likely have a legal component.
That means that you need to have a business lawyer on deck. Period.
They are a key part of your company’s team. Whether you have a general counsel who’s on staff or you simply have a lawyer you’ve built a relationship with, it’s highly unfavorable (and even dangerous) to be without counsel given the landscape of business today regardless of your industry.
Today we’ll focus on what you have and what you need for your business. Now since we don’t have an attorney/client relationship, I can’t evaluate specifically what YOUR business may need. However, use this day as a general guideline and consult with an attorney on exactly what you may need given your stage of business, your location, and the industry you’re a part of.
Also, if you ever need support in this realm, feel free to set up a legal consultation with my firm, J.A. Williams Law (shameless plug!) LOL. But seriously, if we can help you, we’re more than happy to.
Your LEVEL UP Homework
Take the worksheet attached to this email and fill out the checklist. This will help you to see what you may need that’s missing from your legal foundation.
Then after you finish the evaluation of your company, take the next step. That could be, meeting with your business advisor, lawyer, or even your accountant. It just depends on what your evaluation says.
Now, do your best not to be overwhelmed about what needs to be done or the cost right now. It’s inevitable that you are going to need these things. If you need to take it day by day or even year by year to get it all in place, that’s fine.
However, don’t psych yourself out before you get started. Seeing the bigger picture and taking the requisite (and possibly uncomfortable) steps is part of leveling up.
